2 squadrons – had good experience and increased membership after changing name
3 squadrons – didn’t seem to make any difference
1 squadrons – it was proposed several times and voted down
1 – response described the procedure to change the name which was not difficult
The Akron Power Squadron Executive Committee has been asked to consider changing our name to Akron Sail and Power Squadron. One reason is that, by adding “Sail” to the name, non-members would be more likely to connect the “Power Squadron” name with “Boating”. Then, people who are boaters, might want to learn more about us, and ultimately join. Another reason is that the name is more inclusive, since we have members who are both Sail and Power boaters.
On the other hand, Akron Power Squadron was chartered in 1939 and we have used that name for 70 years. It's tradition!
There are nearly 200 squadrons in the US with the name "Sail and Power Squadron" (out of about 450), including five squadrons in Ohio. Columbus, the largest squadron in Ohio, uses the name “Sail and Power Squadron”,
